M40-M43: Deforming dorsopathies
M41: Scoliosis
Scoliosis, classified under the ICD-10 group code M41, is a condition that involves a curvature of the spine. Typically, the spine should appear straight when viewed from the back, however, in cases of scoliosis, the spine forms a C-shape or an S-shape. It usually develops in children and adolescents during growth spurts, but the cause is often unknown. In adults, it may result from aging or conditions such as osteoporosis. Symptoms may include uneven shoulder height, prominent shoulder blade, misaligned hips, or a noticeable curve in the spine. Scoliosis progresses gradually and can vary in severity. It primarily affects the skeletal system, causing discomfort and in severe cases, respiratory and heart issues due to the abnormal spinal curve. Scoliosis is not contagious as it does not involve transmissible agents.
