M41.0: Infantile idiopathic scoliosis

Infantile idiopathic scoliosis, as the name suggests, is a form of scoliosis - a medical condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine - that typically becomes evident during infancy. The term 'idiopathic' indicates that it occurs without any known cause. Instead of a straight line, the spine of a child with this condition curves sideways, often resembling the letter "C" or "S". Symptoms may be subtle during the early stages but can include visible curving of the spine, uneven shoulders, and one hip appearing higher than the other. This scoliosis type is progressive, meaning that it tends to worsen over time as the child grows. It may affect any part of the spine, and the severity of curvature varies widely. Although it can cause discomfort and physical changes, it does not typically lead to other serious health problems. The reason for the occurrence of infantile idiopathic scoliosis remains unknown, but theories suggest possible genetic or environmental factors.
