O30-O48: Maternal care related to the fetus and amniotic cavity and possible delivery problems

O30: Multiple gestation

Multiple gestation is a condition that refers to a pregnancy involving more than one fetus. It commonly occurs when more than one egg is fertilized during a woman's menstrual cycle or when a single fertilized egg splits into two or more embryos, known as identical twins or multiples. The main characteristic of this condition is the presence of more than one baby growing in the womb. Common symptoms usually involve more severe pregnancy signs than with a single pregnancy, such as increased morning sickness, rapid weight gain, and pronounced fatigue. The progression of multiple gestation often requires more frequent medical monitoring due to potential complications, including premature labour, preeclampsia, and obstetrical hemorrhage. The primary systems affected are the maternal reproductive, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems, due to the increased demands of sustaining more than one fetus.
