O30: Multiple gestation

O30.0: Twin pregnancy

Twin pregnancy indicates that a woman is carrying two fetuses at the same time, within the same gestational period. This usually occurs when two eggs, released during ovulation, are independently fertilized by two sperm, resulting in fraternal twins. Another possibility is that a single fertilized egg splits into two, leading to identical twins. Generally, early signs of twin pregnancy are more pronounced and include severe nausea, extreme fatigue, increased appetite, and quick weight gain. The pregnancy is monitored through ultrasounds, blood tests, and physical examinations to manage potential complications, such as preterm labor, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia. Twin pregnancies usually have more frequent prenatal appointments to closely monitor the mother and babies' health throughout the gestation period.
