O30: Multiple gestation

O30.2: Quadruplet pregnancy

A quadruplet pregnancy refers to a pregnancy where a woman is carrying four fetuses. This is a relatively rare condition that occurs when four separate eggs are fertilized (quadri-fertilization), or when a single fertilized egg splits into four embryos, or a combination of both. It is typically identified by a healthcare professional through routine prenatal imaging tests such as ultrasound. A woman with a quadruplet pregnancy may experience more intense pregnancy symptoms, including increased morning sickness, rapid weight gain, and pronounced abdominal growth. Due to the high-risk status of this type of pregnancy, it frequently results in early birth. Possible complications include preterm labor, maternal hemorrhage, and issues related to multiple birth such as Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. The mother and fetuses' health are closely monitored throughout the duration of the pregnancy.
