O30.8: Other multiple gestation
Other multiple gestation is a term used to describe situations where a mother is carrying more than two babies in her womb during a single pregnancy. This uncommon occurrence can be due to various causes, including the use of fertility treatments. Each baby in a multiple gestation pregnancy has its own amniotic sac. However, some of the babies in a multiple gestation may share the same placenta, which can sometimes cause complications. Symptoms of multiple gestation can include increased morning sickness or extreme fatigue, although these can also simply be signs of a single pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, an ultrasound can typically confirm the presence of more than two babies. Complexities with multiple gestations may impact various body systems of both mother and babies, contributing to an increased risk for conditions such as preterm labor and low birth weight in the babies or anemia and preeclampsia in the mother.
