M80-M85: Disorders of bone density and structure

M81: Osteoporosis without pathological fracture

Osteoporosis without pathological fracture is a group of conditions that causes bones to become weak and brittle, progressing silently over a long period without visible symptoms. In this group of conditions, the loss of bone mass and strength is due to an imbalance in the bone remodeling process, affected by factors such as decreasing levels of estrogen after menopause, low calcium or vitamin D intake, inactivity, and aging. Importantly, these cases of osteoporosis do not include pathological fractures, which are fractures that occur in diseased or weakened bone due to minimal trauma. Individuals may not realize they have osteoporosis until they experience pain, loss of height over time, or changes in posture. However, a bone density scan can detect the condition in its early stages before these manifestations occur.
