M81: Osteoporosis without pathological fracture

M81.3: Postsurgical malabsorption osteoporosis

Postsurgical malabsorption osteoporosis, coded as M81.3 in the ICD-10 WHO 2016 classification, is a specific type of osteoporosis that occurs after certain types of surgeries. This condition arises when the body is unable to properly absorb nutrients from food, often due to a part of the digestive tract being bypassed or removed during surgery. The lack of nutrition affects the health of the bones, causing them to lose strength and density, a state referred to as osteoporosis. Common symptoms include fragile bones that break easily, back pain caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra, loss of height over time, and a stooped posture. Over time, the condition may progress, further weakening the bones, and increasing the risk of fractures. Though any bone can be affected by osteoporosis, fractures most often occur in the hip, wrist, and spine.
