F10-F19: Mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use

F13: Mental and behavioural disorders due to use of sedatives or hypnotics

Mental and behavioural disorders due to use of sedatives or hypnotics refer to a group of conditions that occur when a person's use of such substances negatively impacts their mental and emotional state or behaviour. Sedatives and hypnotics include medications often prescribed for anxiety or sleep disorders. Chronic or excessive use can lead to dependency, both physical and psychological. The symptoms of these disorders can vary significantly from person to person, but often include problems with memory, concentration, and coordination, as well as mood swings, sleep disturbance, and even hallucinations or delusions in severe cases. If the substance use is abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms may occur, which can include restlessness, anxiety, tremors, and in extreme cases, seizures. These disorders are very complex, as they usually involve both the brain's reward system and various other brain systems. Therefore, they often require specialized treatment to manage effectively.
