F13: Mental and behavioural disorders due to use of sedatives or hypnotics

F13.4: Mental and behavioural disorders due to use of sedatives or hypnotics withdrawal state with delirium

Sedatives have a tranquilizing effect. Sedatives include, for example, the benzodiazepine group. Sleeping pills help people to sleep. Sleeping pills include, for example, the barbiturates class of drugs.

Before this kind of withdrawal the person has usually consumed too many sedatives or sleeping pills over a long period of time. When someone goes through withdrawal, they have various physical symptoms, because they are consuming fewer or no sedatives or sleeping pills. They may have shaky hands, for example. Their heart may also be racing and they may have a headache.

The withdrawal also alters your state of consciousness. For example, your awareness and memory may alter. One may also no longer know who or where one is.
