N60: Benign mammary dysplasia
Benign mammary dysplasia refers to a group of non-cancerous breast conditions which arise due to abnormal development of the breast tissue. These conditions vary by appearance and symptoms exhibited. Some of these benign conditions may include nodules or lumps in the breast, cysts, or fibroadenomas. The exact cause of benign mammary dysplasia is unknown, but they can happen due to hormonal changes and imbalances during different stages of a woman's life such as menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause. Symptoms can include lumpiness or thickening in the breast, breast pain, nipple discharge, or changes in the size and shape of the breast. These conditions do not progress into breast cancer, however, some types may slightly increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer later in life. The breast is the primary system affected by these conditions.
