M00-M03: Infectious arthropathies
M01: Direct infections of joint in infectious and parasitic diseases classified elsewhere
The group of conditions under M01 refers to the direct infections of joints linked with other infectious and parasitic diseases. These conditions occur when other infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, or Lyme disease extend their effect to a joint, causing discomfort and inflammation. The bacteria, virus, or parasite causing the primary illness also invades the joint, leading to this secondary condition. Symptoms often include pain, swelling, and reduced mobility of the affected joint. As the original disease progresses, so too does the joint infection. The course of the disease varies, depending on the causative organism and the patient's overall health. The infection can affect any joint in the body, but is commonly found in the knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow.
