M00-M03: Infectious arthropathies
Infectious arthropathies is a group of conditions that affect the joints and are caused by various infectious agents. These agents could be bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites which gain entry into the body through different routes like the skin or mucous membranes. They can directly infect the joint or can indirectly cause inflammation of the joint, leading to symptoms like pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function. The course of the disease can be rapid and severe, or slow and mild, depending on the causative agent and the body's immune response. The disease progression may lead to joint damage, which can even be irreversible if not addressed. Frequently, these conditions are part of a systemic infection, which affects the entire body resulting in additional symptoms like fever, fatigue, and malaise. Since these conditions are related to infections, they are observed in individuals of all age groups and are not limited to the elderly or those with pre-existing joint disorders.
