B45: Cryptococcosis
Cryptococcosis is a group of conditions caused by a fungus called Cryptococcus. These types of infections can affect anyone but they're most common in people with weakened immune systems. Cryptococcus is typically found in soil around the globe. People get infected by inhaling the microscopic fungal spores, but the infection often doesn't cause any symptoms until the disease progresses. When symptoms do appear, they can range from persistent cough and fatigue to severe headache and confusion if the infection reaches the brain. This progression can take weeks to months. Besides the lungs and the central nervous system, cryptococcosis can also affect the skin and bones. While the disease can be severe and life-threatening, especially for those with weak immunity, it is generally rare. Note that Cryptococcosis is not transmitted from person to person.
