B45: Cryptococcosis

B45.1: Cerebral cryptococcosis

You have been infected by certain pathogens in the cryptococcosis group. Cryptococci are yeasty fungi. These fungi occur in bird droppings, for example. You can become infected by these fungi if you breathe in unclean dust.

These germs then cause cryptococcosis if the defense system is weak, in particular. The immune system can be weakened by another illness, for example, or by a treatment. If you are infected with the germs, the symptoms usually only appear after several months.

The germs have propagated in your brain. People often initially experience no problems other than mild headaches for a long time as a result of this condition. When the condition progresses, the symptoms may get worse. For example, one’s behavior might change, or one’s vision might get very poor. You may then be seriously ill.
