B45.7: Disseminated cryptococcosis
Disseminated cryptococcosis is a severe, systemic fungal infection caused by the species Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. This condition is not limited to one area of the body but spreads, with the possibility of affecting various organs. It most often affects those with weakened immune systems, including patients with HIV/AIDS or those on immunosuppressive drugs. The fungi are primarily contracted through breathing in particles from contaminated soil or bird droppings. Symptoms can vary depending on the infected organs but often involve respiratory problems, high fever, headache, and in severe cases, mental changes or confusion due to the infection of the central nervous system. If left untreated, this disease can progressively worsen and can lead to serious complications.
