P20-P29: Respiratory and cardiovascular disorders specific to the perinatal period

P26: Pulmonary haemorrhage originating in the perinatal period

Pulmonary haemorrhage originating in the perinatal period refers to a group of conditions in which there is bleeding in the lungs of a newborn baby. These conditions usually occur around the time of birth, which is referred to as the 'perinatal period'. The cause is often related to stress or trauma during delivery, but it can also be associated with lung infections, cardiovascular disorders, or coagulation abnormalities in the newborn. Signs of such conditions may include fast breathing, grunting, nasal flaring, and a bluish skin color due to lack of oxygen, known as cyanosis. Damage may progress rapidly, leading to respiratory distress or failure, and requiring urgent medical care. These disorders primarily affect newborn babies' respiratory systems, but can also impact their overall wellbeing and development due to potential lack of oxygen supply to other organs.
