P26: Pulmonary haemorrhage originating in the perinatal period

P26.0: Tracheobronchial haemorrhage originating in the perinatal period

When we breathe, the air gets into the body via the respiratory tract. The respiratory tract can be divided into the upper and the lower respiratory tracts. The nose and throat form part of the upper respiratory tract. The lower respiratory tract begins at the larynx. This includes the trachea and the bronchia.

If there is a bleed in the child’s airways or bronchia, there may be bleeding from the mouth and nose. If artificial respiration is being given, the fluid that is sucked out may contain blood. There may be breathlessness and accelerated breathing. The skin may also be blueish.
