M40-M43: Deforming dorsopathies
M40: Kyphosis and lordosis
Kyphosis and lordosis are conditions that affect the natural curves of the spine, leading to unusual postures. Kyphosis, also known as a roundback or hunchback, is where the upper part of your spine curves outward more than the standard curve, causing a hunched back. On the other hand, lordosis refers to the inward curve of the lower spine that is excessively curved, making the buttocks appear more prominent. They can originate from various causes, including congenital issues, arthritis, osteoporosis, and poor posture. Symptoms vary, but typically include a visible curvature of the spine, back pain, and occasional difficulty in breathing due to severe curvature. These conditions can be identified by physical examination and confirmed through imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI. Progression varies greatly depending on the cause and severity but maintaining good posture and keeping up with regular exercise can often help manage these conditions.
