L12: Pemphigoid
Pemphigoid refers to a group of rare, autoimmune blistering skin conditions. Although the exact cause is unknown, it's believed that an abnormal immune response triggers the production of antibodies that attack certain proteins in the skin. As a result, fluid-filled blisters emerge, usually on the arms, legs, and abdomen. The blisters tend to be very itchy and may turn into open sores if they burst. The mucous membranes, such as the mouth, eyes, or genitals, may also be affected. The condition's progression varies greatly among individuals, with some experiencing periods of remission and exacerbation, while others may find the disease progresses consistently. Pemphigoid primarily affects older adults and while it can be life-altering, with proper medical attention, it's generally manageable.
