L12.1: Cicatricial pemphigoid
Your immune system is attacking certain parts of your mucous membrane. Your mucous membrane is inflamed and damaged as a result. Most often, the mucous membrane in the head that is affected. Blisters may also form on the rest of the skin.
The mucous membrane is usually red, and broken in some places. This is often painful. When the wounds heal, the mucous membrane scars over. The symptoms depend on which locations are affected. You may have difficulties eating or swallowing, for example. You may lose weight as a result.
The disorder is usually lifelong. Symptoms can vary in severity. There may also be psychological effects.
