G50-G59: Nerve, nerve root and plexus disorders

G57: Mononeuropathies of lower limb

Mononeuropathies of the lower limb are a group of conditions that involve damage or disease affecting a single nerve or nerve group exclusively in the lower part of the body. These conditions are usually caused by physical injury, prolonged pressure on the nerve, or certain diseases like diabetes. Nerve damage can disrupt normal function, causing various symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, or loss of muscle control in areas of the leg, foot, or toes served by the affected nerve. Such symptoms usually develop gradually and might progressively worsen over time, depending on the underlying cause. While any peripheral nerve in the leg can become diseased or damaged, the most commonly affected ones are the sciatic, femoral, peroneal, and tibial nerves. The impact of the disease can be limited to minor sensory loss or could even result in significant disability, making it difficult for the person to walk or move.
