Y45: Analgesics, antipyretics and anti-inflammatory drugs
Y45.1: Salicylates
Salicylates refer to a class of drugs, including aspirin, that mainly function as pain relievers, fever reducers, and anti-inflammatory medications. Adverse effects can occur when salicylates are used incorrectly, leading to salicylate toxicity or poisoning. This condition may result from both acute ingestion (such as an overdose of aspirin) or chronic overuse (regularly taking more than the prescribed dosage). Symptoms of toxicity can range from mild to severe and may include nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), headache, confusion, and rapid breathing. In serious cases, it could cause seizures, fever, or even coma. One's cardiovascular, nervous and gastrointestinal systems are often affected. It's important to use these medications as directed by a healthcare provider to lower the risk of toxicity.
