S00-S09: Injuries to the head

S05: Injury of eye and orbit

The Injury of eye and orbit includes a spectrum of conditions related to harm sustained by the eye or its surrounding structures. Causes can range from blunt force trauma, such as sports injuries or accidents, to penetrating injuries like sharp objects or industrial materials entering the eye. Common symptoms across this group of conditions may include eye pain, redness, vision changes including blurry or double vision, and swelling of the affected area. Disease progression depends on the severity and nature of the injury, whether it’s a simple superficial corneal abrasion or a complex orbital fracture. Some conditions within this group may lead to long-term complications, including irreversible visual impairment, if not promptly addressed and managed. The primary system affected is the ocular system, but since the eyes are closely connected to the brain, nervous system complications can also arise from these injuries.
