Q43: Other congenital malformations of intestine

Q43.8: Other specified congenital malformations of intestine

The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. Most of the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The large intestine (colon) is where water and salt are withdrawn from the stool. The last segment of the large intestine (colon) is the rectum. Stool then leaves the body through the anus. The intestine develops before birth. The intestine sometimes does not develop properly before birth.

Part of the intestine may be larger or smaller than normal, for example. Some of the intestinal wall may also have bulged out. Sections of the intestine may not be in the correct position in the abdomen.
