Q33: Congenital malformations of lung

Q33.0: Congenital cystic lung

The lungs are on the left and right side of the ribcage. They are also connected to the nose and mouth via the bronchial tubes and windpipe (trachea). The lungs consist of a right-hand and a left-hand lung. These lungs, in turn, consist of various pulmonary lobes. There are 3 pulmonary lobes in the right-hand lung. There are 2 pulmonary lobes in the left-hand lung.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

One or more cysts have formed in lung tissue. A cyst is a cavity that does not usually occur in the affected tissue. Cysts can occur in specific areas or throughout the lungs. Cysts in the lungs usually contain air. In some cases these cysts can be identified by ultrasound scans while in the womb. After the birth breathing problems may occur. Inflammation may also occur in the area where the cysts are.
