Q30: Congenital malformations of nose

Q30.1: Agenesis and underdevelopment of nose

We need the nose for breathing and smelling. The outside of the nose is composed of bone and cartilage. The nasal septum divides the nasal cavity into two halves. The inside of the nose is lined with a moist mucous membrane. The nasal concha are bony protrusions in the nose, and also lined with mucous membrane.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

If the nose does not develop properly, parts of the nose may be missing or changed. The entire nose may even be missing. If the nose does not develop properly, breathing problems may occur, for example.
