P07: Disorders related to short gestation and low birth weight, not elsewhere classified
P07.1: Other low birth weight
Low birth weight (LBW) refers to when a baby is born weighing less than 2,500 grams, or 5.5 pounds. This condition, classified as 'Other low birth weight' under the ICD-10 code P07.1, often happens when a baby is born prematurely, that is, before 37 weeks of gestation. However, it can also occur when the baby's growth is restricted in the womb. Key indicators of LBW include the neonate's small size and a lack of body fat. This condition may make it challenging for the infant to eat, gain weight, and fight off infections. LBW can also lead to other immediate health issues and long-term developmental and cognitive complications. Several factors—including poor maternal health, malnutrition, certain infections during pregnancy, and the use of alcohol or drugs—can contribute to the risk of having a low birth weight baby.
