P05-P08: Disorders related to length of gestation and fetal growth
P07: Disorders related to short gestation and low birth weight, not elsewhere classified
Disorders related to short gestation and low birth weight, not elsewhere classified, are a group of conditions associated with an early birth (gestation of less than 37 weeks) and a low birth weight (less than 2.5 kg). These disorders often occur together but can also present separately. They are typically caused by factors during pregnancy, such as maternal health conditions, lifestyle choices, or complications during gestation. Most commonly, these conditions can lead to difficulties in feeding, slower development, respiratory problems, and a higher susceptibility to infections. Although these conditions are not transmitted per se, there may be a genetic component to preterm birth and low birth weight. As the baby grows, these conditions may lead to long term complications like learning difficulties and chronic health issues, affecting various systems in the body. Even though these conditions present significant challenges, with timely intervention and supportive care, most babies can catch up in growth and development over time.
