Medical interventions during a birth can cause wounds. An episiotomy results in a wound in the area between the vagina and the anus. After a caesarean the woman has an abdominal wound. These wounds can become inflamed. The site may swell up and be painful. It may also feel hot. The skin around the wound may be red.
