O00-O08: Pregnancy with abortive outcome

O07: Failed attempted abortion

Failed attempted abortion refers to a range of complications that can occur when an abortion procedure, medical or surgical, does not succeed in terminating the pregnancy. These complications naturally vary, but they often encompass conditions such as ongoing pregnancy, heavy or prolonged bleeding, infection, or injury to the uterus. It's possible for the ongoing pregnancy to be healthy, but in many cases, it can also lead to a miscarriage or fetal abnormalities. Infections could arise from remaining pregnancy tissue in the uterus, potentially spreading to other areas in the reproductive system and causing direct damage or generalized illness. Blood loss could be severe and may cause anemia or shock. In extreme cases, a failed attempted abortion could lead to sepsis, a life threatening response to infection. Typically, then, prompt medical care is necessary following a failed attempted abortion to manage and mitigate any ensuing complications.
