N00-N08: Glomerular diseases

N07: Hereditary nephropathy, not elsewhere classified

Hereditary nephropathy consists of a group of inherited conditions that affect the kidneys. The specific features and severity can vary, but they often involve progressive kidney disease that leads to a decrease in kidney function over time. These disorders are related to genetic mutations, or changes, that are passed down through families. Usually, these abnormalities affect the structures within the kidneys that filter waste products from the blood, called glomeruli. The common symptoms often include blood in the urine (hematuria), high blood pressure, swelling in parts of the body due to fluid buildup (edema), and eventually, kidney failure. As these conditions progress, they can also affect other body systems, leading to a range of additional health issues. Despite the inherited nature of these disorders, in many cases, individuals may not show any signs or symptoms until later in life.
