N00-N08: Glomerular diseases

N05: Unspecified nephritic syndrome

Unspecified nephritic syndrome (UNS) is a group of kidney conditions that lead to inflammation within the kidneys. These conditions are generally caused by our immune system responding aggressively to an infection or other trigger, thereby damaging the glomeruli, the tiny blood vessels within the kidneys. This damage negatively impacts kidney function, leading to symptoms that can include blood in the urine (making the urine appear dark or bloody), swelling in the face, hands, feet, abdomen, or other body parts (due to fluid retention), and a drop in urine output. Over time, if not properly diagnosed and managed, unspecified nephritic syndrome can cause permanent kidney damage and result in chronic kidney disease. UNS is not contagious and can't be transmitted from person to person, but certain risk factors like genetics and exposure to certain medications or infections can increase one's susceptibility.
