N00-N08: Glomerular diseases

N01: Rapidly progressive nephritic syndrome

The Rapidly Progressive Nephritic Syndrome is a severe form of kidney disease that can develop quite quickly, sometimes in a matter of days or weeks. This condition is typically characterized by inflammation of the small blood vessels within the kidneys, known as glomeruli. When these blood vessels become inflamed, it affects the normal functioning of the kidneys, leading to the inability to filter waste products and excess water from the blood. Common symptoms can include blood in the urine, reduced urine output, swelling in the legs, ankles, and around the eyes due to fluid retention, and high blood pressure. It can potentially progress to kidney failure if it is not identified and managed quickly. It is generally caused by an abnormal response of the immune system, likely triggered by infections, certain medications or underlying diseases such as lupus or vasculitis.
