M90: Osteopathies in diseases classified elsewhere
M90.3: Osteonecrosis in caisson disease
Osteonecrosis in caisson disease, often also referred to as decompression sickness or "the bends," involves a painful condition where sections of your bone die due to a lack of blood. This condition arises particularly after a sudden drop in the surrounding pressure, such as surfacing too quickly after diving. The drop in pressure can cause inert gases, usually nitrogen, to form bubbles in the bloodstream and tissues. If these bubbles deposit in the bone, they can disrupt the blood supply, leading to bone tissue death, or osteonecrosis. Typically, this notably affects areas with a single blood supply like the hip or shoulder. The symptoms depend on the area of effect but can include joint pain, limited range of motion, and difficulty bearing weight. Osteonecrosis in caisson disease can progressively lead to bone collapse and severe arthritis if unchecked.
