M83: Adult osteomalacia

M83.0: Puerperal osteomalacia

Puerperal osteomalacia, coded as M83.0 in the ICD-10 WHO 2016 classification, is a rare medical condition primarily seen in women following childbirth, more specifically in the postpartum period. This condition emerges as a result of severe vitamin D deficiency, causing the bones to become soft, fragile, and prone to fractures. Major reasons include poor nutrition, insufficient exposure to sunlight which is crucial for vitamin D synthesis, and, in some cases, it may also be due to certain metabolic disorders. Women suffering from puerperal osteomalacia often present with symptoms such as bone pain, muscle weakness, difficulty in walking, and a decrease in height. In severe cases, the woman may also suffer from multiple fractures. This condition primarily affects the skeletal system, and if left untreated, it can lead to long-term disability and impact the patient's quality of life.
