M51: Other intervertebral disc disorders
M51.4: Schmorl nodes
Intervertebral discs consist of cartilage and connective tissue. Intervertebral discs connect neighboring vertebrae to one another and absorb pressure and shocks.
Tissue from an intervertebral disc can get into the vertebrae if the vertebrae have changed. This can occur when growing, for example, or when under heavy strain for a long period. This can affect one or more discs.
