M31: Other necrotizing vasculopathies
M31.0: Hypersensitivity angiitis
Blood vessels transport the blood from the heart to the different tissues and organs in the body, and back again. In so doing, they provide the tissue and organs with oxygen and nutrients, and remove waste substances. With this disorder, your immune system attacks the body’s own blood vessels. The immune system protects the body from pathogens and foreign substances. The immune system can also destroy cells in the body that have pathologically changed. If the immune system attacks the body’s own blood vessels, those blood vessels can become inflamed. When blood vessels in the skin are affected, patches of the skin may turn red or swell up. Blood vessels in the internal organs such as the kidneys and lungs can also be affected.
There are many possible causes for this condition. Possible causes include medication, pathogens, or a disorder of the defense system, for example.
