M08: Juvenile arthritis

M08.4: Pauciarticular juvenile arthritis

Pauciarticular juvenile arthritis is a type of juvenile arthritis that affects four or less joints in the body, usually within the first six months of onset. It's more common in girls than boys and typically presents during early childhood. The large joints, such as the knees, elbows, and ankles, are usually affected. Symptoms may include pain or swelling in the affected joints, fever, and fatigue. Eye inflammation is a common complication, which could lead to more serious eye conditions if left untreated. The exact cause of pauciarticular juvenile arthritis is unknown, but it is thought to involve both genetic and environmental factors. The progression of the disease varies greatly; some children may experience periods of remission, while in others the disease may continue into adulthood.
