L55-L59: Radiation-related disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue

L58: Radiodermatitis

Radiodermatitis, also known as radiation dermatitis or radiation burns, is a skin condition that occurs as a result of exposure to certain types of radiation. This group of conditions arises most commonly in individuals undergoing radiation therapy for cancer. The radiation used in these treatments, while targeting cancer cells, can also damage healthy skin cells in the area, leading to radiodermatitis. Symptoms typically include skin redness, itching, blistering, peeling, or even skin necrosis in severe cases. Radiodermatitis typically progresses in stages, with initial mild skin changes developing into more severe damage over time. It primarily affects the skin and underlying tissues and can have a significant impact on an individual’s quality of life, especially if not managed properly.
