K55-K64: Other diseases of intestines
K58: Irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. It presents with a combination of symptoms, including stomach pain or cramping, bloating, gas, and changes in bowel movements. These changes can be diarrhea (IBS-D), constipation (IBS-C), or both (IBS-M). It's not exactly clear what causes IBS. Some people may develop the condition after a severe bout of diarrhea (gastroenteritis) or a stressful event. Changes in the community of bacteria in your gut can also potentially trigger the condition. Symptoms can come and go, sometimes severe and at other times, barely noticeable. It’s important to note that IBS doesn't cause changes to bowel tissue or increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
