K43: Ventral hernia

K43.4: Parastomal hernia with gangrene

Parastomal hernia with gangrene is a severe medical condition where a bulge or protrusion of the stomach, intestine, or other organ occurs near a stoma or surgically created opening in the body, usually for waste elimination. This happens due to immense pressure or weakness in the abdominal muscles surrounding the stoma. In the presence of gangrene, the condition is of greater concern as it means there is tissue death in the herniated parts due to lack of blood flow. The primary signs of this condition include a noticeable lump or swelling around the stoma area, discomfort, pain, and changes in stoma function. Symptoms of gangrene may include a change in skin color to greenish-black, a foul smell, and a cold touch. This condition requires immediate medical attention as both parastomal hernia and gangrene can pose severe complications if left untreated.
