J31: Chronic rhinitis, nasopharyngitis and pharyngitis

Chronic rhinitis, nasopharyngitis, and pharyngitis are medical terms referring to long-term inflammation in specific parts of the respiratory system, lasting more than a few months. Chronic rhinitis often presents as a persistently runny or stuffy nose, often with itching, sneezing, and postnasal drip, indicating inflammation of the nose's internal lining. Nasopharyngitis, commonly known as common cold, is characterized by a sore throat, sneezing, and stuffiness. It's often due to viral infections but when chronic, other factors like allergens or irritants might be involved. Pharyngitis denotes inflammation of the pharynx, the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, above the esophagus leading to symptoms like a sore throat, difficulties swallowing, and fever. Chronic versions of these conditions are usually triggered by the persisting presence of irritants such as cigarette smoke, pollution, or certain allergens in the environment. They affect primarily the respiratory system and generally create discomfort and inconvenience rather than serious health threats.
