I05-I09: Chronic rheumatic heart diseases
I09: Other rheumatic heart diseases
"Other rheumatic heart diseases" is a group of medical conditions that occur due to rheumatic fever, an inflammatory disease. The condition develops as a severe consequence of untreated or inadequately treated strep throat or scarlet fever, both caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria. The common symptoms of these diseases may include chest discomfort or pain, fatigue, lightheadedness, fainting, swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet, also known as edema, and palpitations. These diseases primarily affect the cardiovascular system, especially heart valves. Over time, the sustained inflammation caused by rheumatic fever leads to scarring and deformation of the heart's structures, which can significantly impede the normal function of the heart, potentially leading to heart failure or other serious long-term health problems. The progression of these diseases is generally gradual but can be accelerated if left untreated.
