I00-I02: Acute rheumatic fever

I01: Rheumatic fever with heart involvement

Rheumatic fever with heart involvement is an inflammatory disease that can develop after an infection with streptococcal bacteria, commonly known as strep throat or scarlet fever. This condition usually occurs in children and can cause serious effects on the heart, known as rheumatic heart disease. Symptoms vary and may include fever, joint pains, and a skin rash. It can also present with heart-related symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath, as the inflammation can affect the heart valves, heart muscle, and the outer membrane of the heart. Disease progression varies from person to person, some may recover completely while others might develop long-term damage to the heart. It's also possible to have recurrent episodes of rheumatic fever which can lead to worsening heart disease. Interestingly, not everyone who gets strep throat will develop rheumatic fever - it seems to depend on individual's genetic factors.
