H81: Disorders of vestibular function
H81.1: Benign paroxysmal vertigo
Your dizziness is being caused by tiny crystals (‘ear rocks’) that have become dislodged in your inner ear. These crystals are normally embedded in a sort of gel. When we move our head, the crystals move too. Sensory cells in the inner ear perceive the movement of the crystals. As a result, we can sense whether we are moving up, down or sideways. This is vital for our balance. In your case, the crystals have become detached from the gel. Consequently they can float about freely. This upsets one’s balance and causes dizziness.
