H00-H06: Disorders of eyelid, lacrimal system and orbit
H01: Other inflammation of eyelid
Inflammation of the eyelid, often referred to as blepharitis, is a group of medical conditions that cause swelling, itching, burning, and irritation of the eyelid. It can occur on either the outer or inner edge of the eyelid, and often affects both eyes at the same time. The condition is typically caused by a type of bacteria present on the skin and is not contagious. Other factors like allergies, eyelash mites or lice, certain types of skin conditions, or excess oil production in the glands near the eyelid can also contribute to the inflammation. Common symptoms include red and watery eyes, a gritty, burning sensation in the eye, greasy eyelids, itchy eyelids, flaking of the skin around the eyes, blurred vision, loss of eyelashes, and increased sensitivity to light. The progression of the disease can vary, but without proper management, it can cause more serious conditions such as damage to your cornea.
