VI: Diseases of the nervous system

G60-G64: Polyneuropathies and other disorders of the peripheral nervous system

Polyneuropathies and other disorders of the peripheral nervous system generally involve damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Conditions within this group often interfere with the transmission of sensory, motor, or autonomic signals, caused by various factors such as genetic predisposition, infections, metabolic disorders, intoxications, and autoimmune reactions. Symptoms typically depend on which types of nerves are affected and can range from pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness, to more severe symptoms like difficulty moving or paralysis in extreme cases. Diseases progress at different rates, sometimes slowly over the years, while in other situations, they evolve quickly, leading to severely compromised function within weeks or months. All parts of the body may be affected, especially limbs and extremities, and the conditions disrupt patients' regular functioning, affecting organ systems such as muscular, sensory, and autonomic.
