G24.4: Idiopathic orofacial dystonia
Facial movement disorders can manifest themselves in different ways. The muscles may interact incorrectly. Talking, chewing or swallowing may become more difficult as a result. Muscles may twitch or cramp up, too. The person may then inadvertently squint, or their face may become contorted. Muscles in the jaw or tongue may cramp up, too. With some face muscle disorders, the affected muscles may also be very weak. Then, for example, the person’s mouth may often hang open.
