The spinal cord is located in the spinal column. The spinal cord is made up of nerve fibers. The brain uses the nerve fibers to exchange information with the organs, skin and muscles. On the outside of the brain and spinal cord there are three thin meninges (linings). A tough meninx, the dura mater, is on the outside. Below that are two soft meninges.
When the meninges, brain and spinal cord are inflamed it can cause a range of symptoms. It is also possible to get a high fever and feel very sick. Severe headaches and a stiff neck are common. One may also have other pain. You may find it difficult to tolerate bright light and loud noises. Sometimes you may also feel nauseated and feel like you have to vomit. Seizures are possible or you may lose consciousness. You may behave and think differently. You may sometimes no longer be able to control your own movements. Potentially, you will no longer be able to move certain parts of your body.
